The Challenge: Mobility in the Hotel Sector of Tenerife

The south of Tenerife is home to one of the largest hotel offerings in the Canary Islands. Every year, millions of tourists visit the island, and this activity requires an extensive and well-coordinated staff. However, the daily mobility of employees has become a critical challenge for most hotels in the area.

Most of the staff lives in the north of the island and must travel to the south every day to work, in a context marked by traffic congestion and not very direct connections.

This entails high personal costs, stress, punctuality problems, and difficulties in attracting and retaining talent, in addition to a strong environmental impact due to the massive use of private cars.

Faced with this situation, the Hotel and Extra-Hotel Association of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro (ASHOTEL), with the support of the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Government of the Canary Islands, was looking for an innovative and scalable solution that would improve staff mobility, reduce costs and promote more sustainable tourism.

The Solution: a Transport System Designed Together with Citizens

To respond to the mobility challenge, Celering implemented a shared transport system for employees of 14 hotels in the south of Tenerife, combining technology, flexible planning and collaborative management.

The system is based on a digital on-demand transport platform that allows the creation of dynamic routes, adapted in real time to the volume of users, shifts and traffic conditions. This platform integrates:

  • Passenger app: to book journeys, check schedules and modify their trips. The service is only activated when there are reservations, which avoids unnecessary journeys.
  • Passenger app: to book journeys, check schedules and modify their trips. The service is only activated when there are reservations, which avoids unnecessary journeys.
  • Control panel for hotels: with key performance indicators, real-time monitoring and control of use by their employees.

Three strategic routes were designed—San Isidro, Cabo Blanco and Las Galletas—that connect residential areas with the hotel complexes in the south. The routes operate every day of the week and automatically adjust to the number of reservations and the profile of the work shift.

This shared model allows reducing costs, sharing expenses between hotels and employees, and improving operational and environmental sustainability.

From design to daily operation, Celering accompanied the entire process, working in four phases: initial diagnosis (together with WaWa Consultores), service design, operational start-up and continuous improvement based on data and satisfaction surveys.

Impact and Benefits for Hotels and Employees

Since its launch, the system has had a tangible impact:

  • 43% less in transport costs for employees.
  • 33% reduction in the use of private cars, the equivalent of 106 fewer vehicles on the road each day.
  • 25,000 journeys completed.
  • 40% improvement in travel times, with greater punctuality and less stress.
  • 64% less CO₂ emissions, which is about 11 tons saved.

The new transport system has significantly reduced the stress associated with travel, improving the well-being and punctuality of the teams. This has resulted in an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 by employees.

In addition to reducing traffic and emissions in tourist areas, the service has reinforced the image of hotels as responsible employers, improving their ability to attract and retain talent in a very competitive sector.

“With this project we have given a real response, improving the well-being of the teams and the operation of the hotels. The collaboration with Celering has been key due to its flexibility, technical capacity and people-centered approach.”
